John, along with fellow MLAs John Yap and Rick Thorpe, attended a ceremony on November 8, 2006 at the front steps of the provincial Legislature to help repatriate the bagpipes belonging to James 'Piper' Ricardson.
Piper Richardson, whose family settled in Chilliwack in 1909, the only Canadian piper to be awarded the Victoria Cross, was killed in October 8, 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. It was thought his bagpipes were forever lost, but were recently discovered at a school in Crieff, Scotland.
On October 20, 2006, during Small Business Week, John welcomed Rick Thorpe, Minister of Small Business and Revenue, to Abbotsford to check out some of the local businesses.

On August 12, 2006, John volunteered for the Dunk Tank during the Snowbirds autograph session at Abbotsford International Airshow, with all proceeds being donated to Abbotsford Hospice.

John welcomed Economic Development Minister Colin Hansen to Abbotsford on August 10, 2006. Hansen was in town to announce the City will receive $330,000 in funding to help convert the Rec Centre into a Live Site for the 2010 Winter Games.
